Jerome’s mining operation began with the first stake in 1876. In nearby Clarkdale, the smelter began operation in 1915. Following a difficult economic period, the Clarkdale smelter closed in 1950 and Jerome suspended operations in 1953.

In more recent years through our environmental and sustainable development efforts, a reclamation project was completed in Clarkdale to remedy the effects of previous mining eras and assist with the preservation of the Tuzigoot National Monument.
